Discraft Controversy ANGERS Disc Golf Community

What’s up discgenerates — Jefferson here from The Disc Golf World. No DGPT event this weekend, but trust me, there’s still plenty to talk about. Discraft’s latest stamp release has disc golfers screaming AI artwork, and the community is not happy. Oh, and the CCR Open went down too, so let’s get into all of it.

Discraft’s Dominance — Until Now

Let’s be real — Discraft has been running disc golf. They’ve stacked the best pro lineup, flipped the script on plastic, and basically sponsor every other event on tour. And their marketing? Untouchable. Fans eat it up, and that Paul McBeth investment keeps looking better every season.

But for the first time in years, Discraft is catching heat from the community. And it’s all over… fingers? Yeah, fingers.

The Stamp That Sparked the AI Debate

Take a look at the new stamp. Anything off? Oh right — humans have five fingers. Unless you’re counting the thumb (still undecided on that). This design looked more like six fingers, and immediately the AI accusations started flying.

Disc golfers hate AI. Like, really hate it. Social feeds lit up with criticism, and for the first time I can remember, Discraft faced real pushback from its own fanbase. Even I had to dust off the old nickname: “Discrap.”

Is It Really AI? Or Just Bad Design?

Now, to be fair, Discraft employs multiple graphic artists. They even said as much in their own post. Some fans argued the “extra finger” was just a poorly drawn sleeve end crammed too close to the hand. Others said a tucked pinky explained the weird look. Still, the AI accusations aren’t going away.

If it’s not AI, all they have to do is say so. Because right now, the silence is fueling the fire.

Disc Golf’s Awkward Relationship with AI

This isn’t the first AI controversy in disc golf. Earlier this year, Go Throw got roasted for using AI commentators in a video. Fans torched them, and the backlash was so bad people still reference it. Infinite Discs leaned into AI alpaca ads with Tyler Brickley, which at least had comedy going for it. Still divisive, but not career-ending.

The point is: fans don’t want AI replacing artists. This sport has incredible disc golf artists — pay them. Hire them. Support them. Because the second fans smell AI, the support evaporates.

AI in Commercials, Too?

The chatter didn’t stop at stamps. Fans pointed out AI voice usage in Discraft and DGPT commercials. Whether or not that’s true, the seed has been planted. Now the disc golf subreddit is a guessing game of “AI or not,” and everyone has an opinion.

CCR Open Recap

Alright, enough AI — let’s talk CCR Open. This event has history, running alongside DGLO on classic Michigan courses like Renegades Trail and Rivers Edge. Here’s what went down:

MPO Highlights

  • Round 1: Silas Schultz came out on fire, dropping a 14-under (with a bogey!) for a 1084-rated round. Two strokes clear of Luke Taylor.
  • Round 2: Schultz said “let me put my blue hoodie on” and shot a 15-under, rated 1075. Built a six-stroke lead.
  • Final Round: Not his best, but stood on business for the win — his first A-tier victory since 2022.
  • Podium: Luke Taylor in second, Evan Scott and Andrew Marwede tied up in third.

FPO Highlights

Coverage comes out later, but Kat Mertsch took down the FPO title. Big shoutout to her.

Q Series Update

Because I know you degenerates care about the Q Series standings — here’s the quick hit:

  • GT Hancock holds the lead, 70 points ahead of Clay Edwards.
  • Paul Krans jumps into third after a 64-point bump.
  • Other storylines: the 2025 collegiate champ chasing a tour spot, a dropped pro making his way back, and plenty of drama left to unfold.

The potential is there — but man, DGPT slapping its label on everything risks watering down what makes these events special.
