This Week in Disc Golf: Nate’s Big Tease, Match Play, and More

Nate teases a big future announcement that will impact the game, match play is still a thing despite you forgetting about it, and a little bit more in This Week in Disc Golf.

How’s it going Discgnerates! Welcome to the channel.

For the ones who are new: they call me Swiss Cheese because of all the holes in my game—but most importantly, I’m with The Disc Golf World.

You know, that one disc golf YouTube channel with a nephew and uncle turning coverage on its head. Forgetting the podcast format for scripted coverage in a fraction of the time. Of course with some borderline humor tossed in too.

You’re watching This Week in Disc Golf, where I cover all things disc golf from the past week.

Battles at ALE and Stateside Surprises

We already covered the battles overseas at Ale in Monday’s recap. But let’s get into some surprises that dropped during this off week in the States.

Nate Perkins’ Big Tease

One thing that might have slipped under your radar if you weren’t paying close attention: DGPT commentator Nate Perkins nearly let the cat out of the bag on the “All Birdies No Bogeys” podcast with Brian Earhart.

In a sport where you often need to read between the lines of its biggest personalities, Perkins nearly straight-up released a future announcement alluding to something big on the horizon. Judging by both his and Brian’s responses to our post, it’s something large enough to impact our game.

And I’d love to say we know all about it. But the reality is, if you’ve been following us long enough, you know the DGPT (or PDGA for that matter) has little desire to include us in these details. So I’m speculating just like all of you.

I’m just hoping it’s not another Gibson-esque offseason letdown. The sport is over the whole “revolutionary change that’s just a fancy stamped disc” thing.

Our fanbase is more informed than ever, with many newer to the game and the sport’s history not well documented, leading to cautious responses to so-called game-changers.

Could this latest announcement be more of the same? Honestly? Most likely. Especially with the rumor mill still emptying into our DMs.

But allow me to do my part in promoting the sport and speculate exactly what this might hold.

Because I know the DGPT is watching. Trying to make things less awkward for Jefferson when he shows up at the Preserve. Be on the lookout for your boy minus the media vest out there.

Top 3 Most Likely Announcements

  1. Future Sponsorship or TV Affiliation
    – The easy and most likely one. Zenne got attached earlier this season, and with USWDGC around the corner, maybe something focused on FPO? Though comment sections suggest that’s unlikely. But major funding could justify the tease.
    – Also could tie in with Worlds a month away. Some might hope for free live coverage… but yeah, unlikely. More likely: a TV deal, CBS-style. Unless it’s on ESPN (not just The Ocho), it won’t really move the needle. But if we can’t capitalize on the biggest event ever? We don’t deserve mainstream.
  2. Team Event Announcement
    – Match Play this week. Future content creator events. Live practice rounds. It’s clear these are tests for something bigger.
    – Timing’s off, sure. But a real team event with promo, funding, and innovation could be impactful. Still feels more like an offseason announcement though.
  3. USWDGC Restructuring
    – Could the major announcement involve restructuring USWDGC? Possibly making it an amateur major by removing the pro division?
    – It’s complicated, sure. PDGA would need to give up authority. Pro attendance boosts participation and viewership now. But with louder calls at Winthrop and Innova’s willingness to negotiate? Could happen.

Top 3 Things It Should Be

  1. Free Live Coverage (Except Championship Sunday)
    – Even single-card. Attracts new eyes and might boost subscriptions.
  2. BYOD Single-Day Event with Big Prize Pool
    – Get the pros to choose their best teammate, not their best friend. AB/McBeth vs. Vinny/Simon or Gannon/Ricky.
    – Don’t forget the ladies: Kristin + Silva, Ohn + Kat. One-day, high-action event. Biggest rubber ducky of promotions.
  3. Drop the Disc Golf World Media Ban
    – And give us a media vote. Is that really too much to ask for one of the most viewed disc golf channels? I don’t think so. But hey, I’m just the guy telling dick and fart jokes.

Match Play Recap

For those paying attention despite the DGPT’s lack of promotion. The event’s had postponements, reschedules, and crummy weather. But the tour should plaster socials ahead of time. Build drama before it even starts. Something they keep failing at.

Whoever runs that role should enjoy spoiling post-coverage fans. Embrace the salty tears. Promote midweek events in advance.

Kristin vs. Silva

Wasn’t much of a battle. Kristin up 5 by the turn, coasted to a 7–3 win.

Matty O vs. Ricky

Matty won 4 of the first 6 holes and never let Ricky back in. Ricky’s only two wins came from Matty’s mistakes.

Simon vs. Calvin

Back and forth early. Tied after 11. Then Simon took four straight to close it out early.

Kona vs. Weese

Surprisingly the most interesting match. Back and forth early. Weese built a 2-stroke lead late despite missing 6 C1 putts. But she collapsed with OBs and missed putts, handing it to Kona on 18.
