What’s up, DiscGenerates? It’s Jefferson here, and alongside me, as always, the man with more holes than a beginner’s bag — Swiss Cheese. Today, we’re breaking down Disc Golf at the World Games (yep, the biggest thing to happen in our sport in 20 years), plus a full recap of the Turku Open DGPT. Buckle up.
Disc Golf at the World Games – Olympic Potential?
Most of you have heard disc golf made its debut at the World Games, but that’s about all you’ve seen. Their app made DGN look like a production studio, and both shared the fun feature of blocking screen recording. Translation: no clips for us to show you.
This event was massive for disc golf’s Olympic chances. Sure, it’s a long shot, but I’d rather see the PDGA aiming for the Games than not. That means growing the sport internationally and figuring out the right competition format for these kinds of events.
Format & Notable Players
The World Games Disc Golf format was alternate shot doubles, featuring 16 countries — each team with one man and one woman. Big names included Gannon Buhr, Kristin Latt, Thomas Gilbert, Missy Gannon, Eveliina Salonen, Manabu Kajiyama, Nestori Tuhkanen, and more. The real MVP though? Brian Earhart on commentary, carrying the broadcast with accurate, engaging coverage for what could only be assumed was a new audience.
Bracket Breakdown
Teams split into pools, top records advancing to an eight-team bracket: Estonia, Czech Republic, USA, Great Britain, Canada, Latvia, Finland, and Norway.
- Semis: Finland beat Czech Republic, USA steamrolled England.
- Latvia upset Canada but fell to Finland in a back-and-forth battle.
- USA took down Estonia to set up a USA vs Finland final.
Finals & Medal Matches
In pouring rain, Team USA dominated Finland, winning gold. Latvia took bronze after a nail-biter against Estonia, with clutch putting under pressure sealing the deal.
Bottom line — this was a huge success for disc golf’s Olympic aspirations. We need more events like this to push the sport forward.
Turku Open DGPT Recap
While the World Games stole headlines, the Turku Open still brought serious action for both FPO and MPO fields.
FPO Division
Silva Saarinen and Kaidi Asalu battled all weekend. Silva’s 1036-rated round two gave her a huge lead, but late mistakes brought Kaidi back. After a missed birdie putt from Silva on 18, we went to a playoff — where Silva secured the win.
Shout-out to Sintija Kiežberga for her first top-five Elite Series finish.
MPO Division
Ezra Robinson, rocking his bayou chic, and Calvin Heimburg were the final-day headliners. Ezra overcame early putting woes, hit clutch circle 2 birdies, and — with a little hay-bale bounce luck — took his second win of the season.
Why These Events Matter
From World Games Disc Golf building the sport’s Olympic case to the Turku Open DGPT delivering drama, this was a landmark week for the sport. Country vs country formats create storylines that draw fans in, and better coverage will only make it grow faster.
