DGPT Responds to Music City Open Controversy

Disc golf has officially gone mainstream—but maybe not in the way fans were hoping.

What’s up, discgenerates? Jefferson here, and with me as always is Swiss Cheese—he’s got holes in his game, but not in his commentary. We’re breaking down everything you need to know from a wild Music City Open weekend.

Weather Woes and Match Play Mayhem

Things didn’t get off to a great start. Heavy rain forced the cancellation of the Match Play event, and while we’re still waiting for a reschedule announcement, the skies had more in store. Tornado warnings eventually suspended play and forced schedule changes. Miraculously, all three rounds were still completed and champions were crowned. But we’ll get to that.

First, a big shoutout to the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the local Nashville crew. They hauled in mulch, rerouted play, and did whatever it took to keep the tournament alive. Respect where it’s due.

Gossage Speaks His Mind

Aaron Gossage wrapped up his practice round with a strong opinion about the state of disc golf and where it’s heading. Check out the clip here Let us know what you think—is the sport on the right path, or is it time to make some changes? At the end of the day fans’ preferences should shape the direction of the courses on Tour.

The Viral Moment: Abigail Wilson and DGPT Controversy

Disc golf dipped into the mainstream over the weekend when Abigail Wilson’s clip went viral, racking up millions of views across social media. Even if you don’t know who she is, chances are you saw the video—or at least the fallout.

After searching Kastaplast’s socials for her signature disc, fans were disappointed to find it wasn’t available. According to Wilson, this viral moment might have ruined her chance of ever getting one. Mainstream news outlets like The Daily Wire picked up the story, and it quickly grew beyond a disc golf drama.

Before the event, Wilson says she was reprimanded for misgendering a player on her card. She also pointed out that protests were planned against the same trans-identifying player who received a terrorism threat at last year’s Music City Open. Security was reportedly heightened for that reason, and yes—we can confirm—there were bag checks. Ours included.

Wilson accused the DGPT of failing to keep players safe and claimed a staff member told her she’d be penalized and removed from the tour if she misgendered another player.

That would be a bombshell—if true. It’s also possible the comment came from a staffer without authority, voicing personal frustration.

DGPT President Jeff Spring responded, stating there was security in place: an on-duty officer, plainclothes guards, and armed personnel, along with the aforementioned bag checks. He also clarified that Wilson had not broken any rules or policies so there wouldn’t be consequences like she was alluding to.

The DGPT published two articles soon after: one detailing their policy and security approach and another addressing whether a recent presidential executive order would affect tour eligibility. The short answer? No. The Pro Tour receives no federal funding, and policies established in a 2023 settlement will remain in place through the 2025 season—or until the Olympic Committee says otherwise.

FPO Recap: Silva Shines, Kristin Chases, Holyn Streaks

Despite the chaos, the FPO division delivered one of the most compelling events we’ve seen all season.

Missy Gannon opened with a hot round—her highest-rated of the season at 7-under. Silva Saarinen caught fire late, birdieing 5 of her final 7 holes (including two clutch C2 putts) to tie Missy atop the leaderboard. Kristin Tattar and Eveliina Salonen trailed by four.

Kristin fired back with a second-round course record: an 11-under, 1047-rated performance highlighted by seven straight birdies. But Silva answered with another 7-under round to maintain her lead heading into Championship Sunday.

That set the stage for yet another Silva vs. Kristin showdown. We’ve seen this one before—and Kristin’s usually the one making the comeback.

Silva struck early, but Kristin erased the lead with a 47-foot birdie on Hole 8. Silva answered with back-to-back parked approaches, and Kristin went OB on Hole 11, giving Silva a 4-stroke lead with seven to play—the same seven Kristin birdied the previous round.

Kristin gave it everything, including a massive 37-foot birdie on 17, cutting the lead to one heading into 18. And of course, she parked it.

Silva missed, forcing a playoff. Back to Hole 17.

With nerves maxed out, Kristin played it flawlessly. Silva, still reeling from the pressure, couldn’t match it.

That’s Kristin’s second three-peat win of the season—and her third Gibson guitar. Silva, in tears, came so close to her first win on U.S. soil.

Meanwhile, Holyn Handley put together a bogey-free 10-under round from the chase card to finish third and extend her podium streak. Cadence Burge landed her first Top 5 at an Elite Series, continuing an impressive breakout season.

MPO Recap: Anttila, Buhr & the Comeback That Wasn’t

On the MPO side, Ricky Wysocki and Isaac Robinson shared the lead after Round 1. But Round 2 turned chaotic. With severe storms incoming, play was halted mid-round Saturday and resumed early Sunday morning.

That pause cooled Ricky off—but lit a fire under Paul McBeth, who came back with six straight birdies to start Sunday and climb into contention alongside Austin Turner and Niklas Anttila.

Turner shot an 8-under to set himself up for the best finish of his career. Meanwhile, Gannon Buhr was charging hard from the chase card, going 10-under through 11.

The lead card was battling. Paul and Niklas kept pace until Paul’s drive on Hole 15 went OB. Niklas capitalized with a C2 birdie and a fist-pumping “Let’s go!”.

That opened a two-stroke lead that he never relinquished. He finished clean, taking the win, back-to-back DGPT victories, and another Music City guitar.

Gannon tied the course record with a 13-under to leap into a tie for second with Turner—who, after touring sponsorless last season and unsure of his future, now has a career-best finish.
