Hello, discgnerates. It’s Swiss Cheese with the Disc Golf World—the YouTube channel that refuses to be put in a box and covers the sport our way, in a fraction of the time the rest of them take.
Welcome to This Week in Disc Golf, where I break down all things disc golf from the past week. Even with a split player pool and an “off” week, there was plenty going on. You’d think I’d lead with Match Play. But let’s start with the thing that actually got views—even if they were mostly hate-watches.
Go Throw’s AI Commentary Disaster
Go Throw Disc Golf finally released their coverage of the 2024 USDGC Distance Competition. Months late? Sure. But that wasn’t the problem. The problem was the use of… let’s call it “off-putting Bro Bot AI” commentary. Honestly, it sounded more like a “Love on the Spectrum” date than disc golf post-production.
It was clunky, awkward, with weird nuggets of information popping up seemingly from nowhere. The comment section was savage. So savage, in fact, they issued an apology and promised a new release with the AI stripped out entirely.
Look, coverage is evolving. AI is everywhere in sports media. It was bound to hit disc golf, even if the fans weren’t ready. Or maybe it was just that bad. Honestly, I doubt Go Throw expected this level of backlash. After hours of editing and scripting, to have people call it lazy? Ouch.
But credit where it’s due: most people would’ve pulled the video. They left it up. Respect. Would we have pulled it in their shoes? Who knows—but it would have at least been a heated conversation.
Next time, fellas—you’ve got our number. We have the equipment. We know how to read a script. Just give us a call. Trust me: we’re better at that than we are with our camera work.
DGPT’s Creator Challenge (And Other New Stuff)
The Disc Golf Pro Tour is rolling out new stuff this year like they’re Oprah handing out prizes. Paid Jomez practice rounds. A new DGPT Championship format. Gambling. Match Play. They’re innovating so much that new announcements are overshadowing the old “new” ones.
Case in point: this week they announced the Creator Challenge. Eight pros and nine content creators, teamed up for a 12-hole doubles comp. I know most of you are expecting me to crap all over this like it’s a grey Hyundai. But I won’t.
Sure, there were some questionable picks (including some staffers), it forced me to fight for more Bear Bite, and it made Jefferson rant about not being seen as a content creator. But I can’t hate on it. If I’m allowed to bet on it? Hell, I’ll watch it twice.
It’s a genuinely innovative idea. Live, free on YouTube. That free part matters. And while I think you’d get more views from a tight post-produced edit than live coverage, it’s revenue either way. Worth tossing at the wall to see if it sticks. Does it “move the needle”? Maybe. But honestly, I feel Andrew Presnell’s doubles idea does it better.
The Presnell Approach
Presnell keeps it simple: BYOP (bring your own partner) doubles with ratings caps for parity. That’s something I’d watch. More exposure for players, better dynamics, real teamwork. Or hell—why not take off the ratings cap? Make it high buy-in, big prize pool, actual super teams. Make it the All-Star game we deserve.
It doesn’t need wheel spins, drama twists, or forced mixed teams to make it exciting. Just good play and real players. That’s all I want in whatever new midweek showcase the DGPT dreams up next. Because you know they’re testing these ideas to build a real team format future.
Match Play Recap: Chaos, Comebacks, and Carrolas
Let’s talk Match Play. It had a little bit of everything: cox puns, shared bucket hats, and even a Toyota Carrola. Yeah, someone was apparently driving on the service road mid-event. Just one more bizarre thing in a season full of them.
Some MCO Match Play matches got pushed to this week. Four matchups in total, highlighted by some big names. Let’s break them down:
Isaac Robinson vs. Joey Buckets
- Buckets came out hot, winning the first hole and getting gifted another after Isaac missed a 15-footer on 4.
- He led by 3 at one point, but Isaac battled back with clutch putting to tie it up.
- Isaac hit a huge 60-footer to half 14, went down a hole with 3 to play, then forced a tie after a brutal spitout for Buckets on 16.
Niklas Anttila vs. Ezra Robinson
- Fireworks matchup. 13 of 18 holes were won outright between them.
- Lead changes everywhere. Ezra went up two, Niklas answered with two to tie.
- Ezra birdied 16, but Anttila needed the final two and delivered. Bullseyed 17 and took 18 to win 7-6.
Adam Hammes vs. James Proctor
- Hammes jumped to a two-hole lead on the first two holes, including a 45-foot eagle on 2.
- Extended to four before James scored on 8.
- Hammes shut the door early with a 5-1 win.
FPO Action: Missy vs. Rebecca
Shortened FPO bracket because Paige Pierce sat out (precautionary, thankfully). That left Missy Gannon vs. Rebecca Cox. Missy came out wearing clever heart “cox” merch, scored first, and stretched it to a three-hole lead.
Rebecca got her first hole on 8 but struggled, with just two birdies all round. Missy could basically coast despite dropping two bogey holes late, finishing with a 5-2 win for her first Match Play victory over Cox.
Quick Hitters
- Paige’s injury seems precautionary. Chandler Kramer rolled an ankle. Austin Turner is skipping the Cascade Challenge.
- Not shocked Kat Mertch has a pet raccoon. Didn’t expect to learn it on Mother’s Day, though.
- Kona Montgomery did the full Twilight tour in Forks. Also shared her old-school Paramore/Hot Topic vibe. Respect.
- Pros showing off new ratings week. Sophia and Disctay hit the Vegas Strip. Bradley and Calvin go hiking and kayaking. Honestly, find you someone who holds you like Bradley Williams holds… well, anything.
- Scott Stokley overshares on Disc Golf Fanatic. Let’s just say beautiful women seem to be on his mind a lot.
- Spring cleaning among pros: Kristin Tattar sells old jerseys. Drew Gibson tries to unload his entire collection… then a watch. Also threatens us with a new weekly podcast. I’m listening, Drew.
- Zach Melton had a tough day at the poker table. Hammes literally tosses a disc over a deer. Erika Stinchcomb “blades” a shot like it’s ‘93 Augie in Airborne.
- Streaming disc golf matches is basically Whatnot for pros now. Alden and crew all in.
- Evelina back on the links in Europe. Simon looking like Ultimate Brodie—or that one frisbee dude on the beach tossing lids to himself and rolling them off his chest. You know the one.
