We’re back on U.S. soil — jetlagged, slightly delirious, but still covering all things disc golf from the past week. It’s another episode of This Week in Disc Golf with your host the one with all the holes in my game, Swiss Cheese but more importantly just one-half of the Disc Golf World. That pesky YouTube channel that somehow still gets people to tune in.
Shoutouts from the Road
First off, thanks to everyone who supported us during our Worlds coverage — whether you watched, commented, or came up to us in person. Major props to the other creators who braved the trip: Broderic, Wild Runs (who’s been along with us for the past three straight Worlds!), Sako, Another Round, Happy With Par, Zack Attack, Josh Mansfield of Ultiworld, and my personal fave — the guys over at
La Discuiterie, a French disc golf channel whose name I butchered into “Pâté.” Sorry, fellas.
Worlds: The Gold Standard
This year’s Worlds was hands down the greatest championship experience we’ve ever seen — massive infrastructure, real investment, and pro-level details. Media treatment was next-level, thanks to the Finland crew who secured our access when others denied it. We had unmatched player access, a custom media tent with lighting, and a front-row seat to history.
Jussi Meresmaa: Mic Drop?
Post-event, Jussi dropped a cryptic “My job is done” on social media. Some see it as retirement; others think it’s just a dramatic pause. If true, it’s a storybook ending — the man who brought Worlds to Finland (and outside the North America. for the first time) sees his Discmania star, Gannon Buhr, crowned champion. But with rumors about The Beast course possibly returning, we’re not convinced Jussi’s riding off into the sunset just yet.
Record-Breaking Views
The numbers don’t lie — 1.3 million combined views on Sunday alone, second only to a Finnish track & field event. That’s with the free Finnish broadcast included, peaking during FPO. Proof that storylines bring more eyeballs than perfect putting. Talking heads might rant about missed putts, but new fans come for the drama.
DGLO’s “F” Grade and 2025 Worlds Pressure
Next year’s Worlds lands in Milford, Michigan — home of DGLO. That’s awkward, considering Gannon Burr, Alden Harris, and Silas Schultz gave DGLO the only “F” in their tour stop ratings. Criticism includes punishing rough, minimal scoring separation, and a back nine that’s a par parade. Nate Heinold and team have the chops, but they’ll need to deliver a layout worthy of following Finland’s gold standard.
The 2024 Fandom Survey
The fandom survey is back, courtesy of First Available Research and Ultiworld. It’s your chance to share opinions on disc golf trends, player popularity, and viewing habits. My gripe? Still no deep dive into YouTube creators outside the podcast bubble. With nearly 98% of fans watching disc golf on YouTube, how are big hitters like Broderic, Bodanza, Jmilly, and overseas giants still flying under the survey radar?
Oh and us… better like next year!
Final Thoughts
That’s a wrap on this week’s chaos. Shoutout to our Patreon crew, every fan who stopped us at Worlds, and everyone still reading this. If you haven’t subscribed yet, you know the drill. We’ll be back next week with more hot takes, bad puns, and questionable metaphors.
